MY FAVORITE RECRUITING TIPS

It's about culture add, 
​
not culture fit.

"Culture fit" is often a code word indicating that companies are looking to hire people (who look/act/talk/think) like the employees they already have. Not helpful in reaching diversity goals! Instead, try replacing the phrase with "culture add." If you look for candidates aligned with company values, someone who's a "culture add" will enhance great company culture with their unique background and perspective, making you even stronger. ​

Meet people where they are.

Candidates from underrepresented groups may not always come to you, especially if your industry has historically not been friendly to them. If you're looking to increase your team's diversity, invest in building long-term relationships with organizations that serve as resources for these communities, showing that you support their work and getting to know great candidates along the way.

Structure is your best friend.

We're all biased; that's how our brains work. Once we learn more about our biases, we can put systems in place (like structured interview guides) that help us make decisions with rational business sense, not letting those biases play tricks on us. I've got several workshops on this topic.

Tech Recruiting
​System Design and Launch

In 2018, I designed and launched the recruiting system at an early stage tech startup. The new system, which we're using to build the company's engineering and design teams, has significantly diversified the pool of candidates (for example, multiplying the number of women-identifying candidates in the software engineer pipeline by 4x) and saved countless hours of staff time.​

Sales Recruiting

I got my start in recruiting at a SAAS startup, where I sourced four Account Executives to build the Sales team in the company's west coast office. ​While learning the recruiting basics, I also found I had a knack for candidate experience, and have since enjoyed helping other clients improve candidate experience for their recruiting functions.
